Fenix HM65R ShadowMaster Rechargeable LED Head Torch

The Fenix HM65R ShadowMaster is a variation on the popular HM65R, designed by the UK distributors in conjunction with Fenix. This special edition HM65R ShadowMaster is only available to the UK market and is primarily designed with fishing, hunting, camping, military and mountain climbing in mind, as it offers a red output with multiple brightness settings in addition to the white light.

The red light preserves the night vision of the user, while making their position to others less obvious than a white light, which is perfect for being out in the wilds where you may not want to disturb wildlife or others around you.

For extra durability and resilience the HM65R ShadowMaster has the same triple proofing properties and is made from lightweight magnesium alloy, which is 32% lighter than the equivalent aluminium alloy body, and it is drop resistant to 2 metres distance as well as being waterproof to IP68 standard.

The main right hand Luminus SST40 white LED provides white lighting that has five brightness levels, with a maximum output of 1200 lumens and a spotlight than can reach up to 168 metres in the turbo setting. The left hand Cree XP-E2 red LED provides red lighting that had four brightness levels, with a maximum output of 150 lumens and a beam range of 30 metres.

The white and red lighting are controlled separately with the two buttons that are located on top of the head torch. They are operated in the same way with one controlling the white LED and the other controlling the red LED. Press and hold either button for 0.5 seconds to turn the light on and then each press will cycle through eco, low, mid, high, turbo for the white light and low, mid, high, turbo for the red LED depending on which button you press. Holding the relevant button for 0.5 seconds will turn the light off and the last used setting will be remembered next time the light is turned on.

The white and red outputs can be changed between while the light is in use by pressing and holding the opposite button to the light that is currently in use for 0.5 seconds, so for example if you are in the red light mode, press and hold the white light button for 0.5 seconds to change to the white light. The beams cannot be used together, so the output will change from one to the other.

To prevent accidental activation the HM65R ShadowMaster has a lockout function. To access the lockout, with the lamp turned off, press and hold either or both buttons for 3 seconds and the low red will blink four times to show it is in lockout. Press both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to unlock the light.

The included 18650 rechargeable 3400 mAh lithium-ion battery is charged inside the headlamp via the USB Type-C charging port which is located on the back of the headlamp. Simply lift the dust cover and plug in the USB Type-C cable at one end and plug the standard US-A end into a USB port or a USB adaptor. The four charging indicators that sit between the two buttons will gradually illuminate until all four are lit to show charging is complete, which takes approximately 3 hours with a 3400 mAh battery when using a 5 V, 2 A adaptor.

Two CR123A lithium metal batteries can be used with this head torch, however they are not rechargeable therefore please do not attempt to charge the torch with these batteries installed.

The four LED indicators also light up when either button is pressed when the light is off to show remaining battery power. Four LEDs is 81-100% power, three LEDs is 61-80% power, two LEDs is 41-60% power, one LED is 21-40% and one flashing LED is less than 20% power and the torch should be charged as soon as possible when at this stage.

The headband is comfortable and adjustable, has a silicone strip on the inside that channels sweat and rain away from the eyes and the new weaved design is hollow to not only reduce the weight by 30% but also provide more breathability and comfort. The headlamp bracket is ergonomically designed to comfortably fit the curvature of the head and it also allows the head torch to be tilted within a 60° angle.

Intelligent overheat protection will lower the output of the torch of the temperature reaches 60° in order to cool the torch and prevent damage from overheating. Once the torch has cooled the turbo mode can be selected again. There is also a low voltage warning function that will flash to warn you if the voltage is too low to sustain the current output and notify the user that the battery needs charging.

Tested in laboratory conditions to ANSI/PLATO FL1 standard using 1 x Fenix ARB-L18-3400 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery under the temperature of 21±3°C and humidity of 50% - 80%. Results may vary between torch, battery and environments.
